Chris Wallace and “flake” question to Rep Bachmann

FNC’s Chris Wallace is taking lots of heat for his “flake” question to Rep Bachmann…..

…I thought I would post a blog specific posting so you all could comment in one place…so what do you think about the “flake” question ?

  • Sal

I use to have a lot of respect for Wallace, watched his show every Sunday, but after yesterdays interview with Rep. Michele Bachmann, its gone! He blew it big time.

    • Sal

how are you doing with the new format? I’m still green about the order the replies are in.. Like first reply to last reply, they seem to jump around to me..

      • Sal

thanks Craig, It was easy to catch on to previous formats.. Guess I’ll hit and miss with this one for awhile…
Greta told me about the bugs!!

    • Anonymous

Chris, IMO, is Juan Williams – lite.

    • Anonymous

Me too Sal, I will no longer watch him. He has lost all credibility with me.

      • Sal

Hi… how are ya doing Texan are you finding this format easy?
I’m still wading around trying to find others that post links etc.. having no luck

        • Anonymous

Hi Sal….well I don’t really know what I am doing, but I am trying! lol….I think we will get used to it.lol

          • Sal

We have before, we’ll master this one too! LOL

  • Steve_J

That type of question is fine when he is talking to Brian on F & F in the morning. It’s inappropriate when interviewing national figures (regardless of party) on a news program.

    • Sal

      Agree.

  • Nray

I confess I have not watched the whole interview but I have seen the piece where he asks if she is a flake. From what I can see he was just asking what others have said about her. (what some great “journalists” have said) And, before that he was asking other questions about what others have objected about her. I can’t see it as a sexism thing. I don’t know…I have the whole thing taped…will see it soon.

  • Anonymous

Wallace is no better than Katie Couric. They are both “snakes in the grass” and obviously thrive on “I gotcha moments” versus being objective in their questions. I wish FOX would quit messing around and “can” these people. I too will turn the channel when I see he will be on. I have no further interest in anything he has to say.

    • ndMecha1

I don’t really think there is a “gotcha” question every politician is afraid of saying “I don’t know the answer to your question” I think politicians should have enough balls to say so. There isn’t anything wrong with not knowing an answer. Just say so. Although I agree with you about Wallace, I never liked the guy.

The Apple doesn’t fall far from the Tree. CNN is hiring

  • D Lazarek

He certainly could have phrased the question better. Rep. Bachmann showed a lot of class in her answer, however. A lot more than Mr. Wallace

  • Guest

Pat Caddell said it so well on Cavuto (FNC)… “After she finished responding to his flake question…should have said, Well Chris, since we’ve spent the first 15 minutes answering your gotcha question, may I tell you why I’m running for president” (paraphrasing).

  • Anonymous

I have one question I would like to find an answer to: Has Chris ever asked any other Presidential candidate if he was a “flake?” And if not, why not? All of the last 3 Dem. White House occupants would qualify for that description much more than Bachmann ever could.

    • SL Cole

No, but he was asking Bachmann a question *others* have posed… perhaps not as artfully as he could/should have… and he regularly “grills” his male guests about equally uncomfortable subjects and perceptions. http://bit.ly/jgoTJ7

He wasn’t wrong to ask the question; he was wrong to ask it the WAY he asked it.

I first became aware of Bachmann because of people telling me “she’s a whack-job looney.” That was over a year ago. Unlike many, I’ve done my homework and learned more about her and now know that accusation is patently false.

She’s running for President. Part of doing that successfully is addressing the misperceptions people have about you. Playing the victim because someone asked you a question you didn’t care for should be the territory of the likes of Obama, Pelosi, et al. Not capable, qualified candidates like Michele Bachmann. She could have, should have, knocked that out of the park. Hopefully next time she’ll be ready to answer these sorts of questions. Cuz as a Conservative Tea Party Woman, she’s gonna be getting a lot more of them from people who respect her a lot less than anyone at Fox News does.

what’s the big deal? not any worse than Palin is asked on a regular bases by the LSM.

a very low, unnecessary blow.. and he should be ashamed..after all why would he even invite a “flake” to come on his program

HE was referring to people like you that call her a flake…as u just did.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LVZ4IZ4ITJHRLU3S6YOPPLV264 John

He may have thought he was talking to Obama.

  • Sterling4242

Not an appropriate question of any serious candidate for President of United States.
I expected more class from him………

    • Anonymous

I never expected more of him. He is, after all, the son of Mike.

  • Wisconsin Fred

I think Wallace’s “flake” question is something you would not expect to hear on Fox, no matter who the interviewee or interviewer. Thankfully, you would never hear a question worded like that from Greta.

  • Anonymous

I do not believe Chris Wallace intended to insult Rep. Bachmann. She is a woman running for office, and a lot more will be thrown her way. I believe he was testing her. Chris Wallace is too fine a man to directly insult any person he interviews. Before the public judges this man, let us look at his career in the news world. It is good.

  • Daniel Larson

I watched this interview, Chris asked Michele a specific question and it seemed like Michele was skirting the question, Chris tried to get her on point for a direct answer to the question, Michele was missing the point of the question so Chris articulated it in a very direct manner. I adore Michele, but she needs to understand we the people are tired of politicians skirting our questions, answer the damn question with an honest, direct, answer, no more beating the bush. I think once Michele answered the question, she did so with an honest, heartfelt answer. We can not afford vague answers from our politicians, we need to know what they are going to do to fix this country, and how they are going to do it specifically. There is only one immediate fix for the economy, that is drill baby drill.

    • SL Cole

Agree completely. One thing is for and for certain. We’ve GOT to get someone else… almost anyone else… in the White House! Obama isn’t anywhere near the leader Michele Bachmann is.

  • Guest

I want to know what Michelle Bachmann meant when she said, “We have not yet finished laying the ground work,”? Did anyone else pick up on this??

  • Anonymous

I’m mixed…it seemed he was trying to evoke the comments that others had made and give her a chance to prove otherwise…but, there was a snarkiness that made me wince, maybe his facial expression or tone…not sure. But, I’m watching FOX News and not Chris Matthews on MSNBC for a reason, so save the snarky, gotcha, agendizing and be direct so there isn’t a chance to mistake his intentions. Wallace is a very experienced interviewer, he knows exactly what and how to undermine someone. Hard for me to think he didn’t know exactly what he was doing, and that’s what I was reading. Didn’t work with me though, just makes her look stronger for surviving the tactics.

  • Frankco521

send Chris Wallace to liberal MSNBC. why try to undermine her in such a low way? would he ask Obama such a tacky question?

  • Lftcoaster

I was shocked that Chris Wallace would use such a term inappropriately describing Rep Bachman. But since he did use the term, saying that it was being used in DC, He should now identify those people who have been using that derogatory name calling. Chris Wallace should man up and identify the sources.

      • SL Cole

I agree. Obama/Biden regularly gaffe on issues of substance.

My point is: (1) reply to the “identify sources” of the original post, (2) most of the “gaffes” I could find attributed to Bachmann are nothing of substance, (3) Chris Wallace didn’t pull the question out of thin air.

The charge is “out there” and she needs to address it… definitely and without apology. She is up to the task, but she’s gonna have to anticipate these kinds of things. They will do their best to “Palinize” her too.

I was shocked too, I am horrified at how name calling and slurs have become the norm. Liberals and progressives are the worst. “Hollyweird” has promoted an “anything goes” mentality that has been very bad for our society.

I am just extremely sad about the derogatory things people think are okay to say to each other. What happened to decorum and manners? How about conservatives LEAD by example and get the country back to better behavior?

  • Guest

People should be questioning that fraudulent BC of Obama’s! There IS something to this people…he is no help to the country much less than he is a citizen of this country. Why would “anyone” want to change the country you grew up in from feedom to no freedom. Also I would like to know what passport Obama used when went to Pakastan!!

  • Cfinch4444

Snob journalism. Fox slides down again and they will not. Be honest in their apologies. Shame on Chris and Fox for their arrogance. News gets more shallow by the day, especially in the AM. Hard to continue watching this drivel.

    • http://kathyray49.blogspot.com Jeannie Thayer

It refreshing to hear from someone who understands the FOX play book!

  • Lee Clapp

OK, he said it and he apologized—–but we in America could care less about what the “buzz” is, that exists inside of the Beltway—which is how he framed the question.
What is spoken by the pundits inside that circle of Interstate around the Capitol is of scant importance and therefore not worthy of asking the question in the first place. And, I have a great deal of respect for both of the people that appeared on the show….but, the question was totally out of line and not germane to the interview.

  • Anonymous

How does this new disqus work now? I am completely in the dark.

As far as Wallace is concerned I think that question was way out line and totally inappropriate!

  • SL Cole

I saw the interview yesterday. Within the *context* the term “flake” was used, it was perfectly appropriate. The question was related to questions that have been raised about Michele Bachmann in which previous things she has said and done, or not, have caused *some* people to perceive her as “flaky” and “gaff prone.” Mike Wallace did NOT call her a flake himself.

He did, however, provide her a platform to address these concerns and speak to her detractors. It is the sort of question he *commonly* asks men and no one ever questions it as being insulting or inappropriate.

She chose to be offended rather than take advantage of a great opportunity to shut down people who don’t respect her. I watch Fox News Sunday religiously. I’ve never observed Mike Wallace to be ungracious or unkind to anyone, even people who *deserved* to be treated with contempt… Michele Bachmann cannot be counted among that group – at all. She is a perfectly capable candidate… who DOES occasionally say “flaky” things, such as state as fact that John Wayne was born in Waterloo, Iowa when he was actually born in Winterset, Iowa. http://bit.ly/iuCECw

She misspoke. That’s all. Doesn’t make her flaky and I fail to see why she, or anyone else, should take Mr Wallace’s question as an insult when he was simply stating that this sort of thing is seized on by those who want to marginalize her… because she’s a very successful Conservative woman. Obama and Biden say stupid like that almost every time they open their mouth and the media barely notices.

I’m frankly disappointed that Ms Bachmann has chosen to be offended rather than jump on the chance to shut down her detractors… Mike Wallace is not a detractor and he wasn’t trying to be. He regularly plays “devil’s advocate” with his guests, asking hard, often uncomfortable, questions and perhaps people who aren’t prepared to deal with probing questions shouldn’t accept invitations to be on Fox News Sunday. I’m disappointed that Michele Bachmann is making an issue of the event… and it causes me to wonder if, maybe, she *isn’t* up to the task of President after all. If she wins the seat, she’s gonna get slapped with a whole lot worse things than this.

I want to be clear. I WANT her to do well. I would be honored to have her as President… she’s to hell and gone better than the guy currently sitting in the Oval Office!!! But if she’s going to play “with the big boys” she’s gonna have to figure out a better way to deal with questions like this she doesn’t care for or she’s gonna be painted with the same brush they’ve painted Sarah Palin… who is far more gaff prone and equally more qualified to run this country than the current bozo.

    • Bella

I totally agree with this comment. He has been asking all the candidates tough questions because he knows that the left is going to be brutal to them and he is preparing them for these questions. You folks need to calm down, this man is a great journalist.

      • SL Cole

I don’t do Gretawire hardly ever. I was SO shocked to see the comments about this! If you didn’t see the show and are just reacting to the “second hand” representation, I suppose I could understand some of the comments. But Chris Wallace is NOT Mike Wallace and I was stunned to see such vitriolic statements about him here! He, Brit Hume, and Bret Baier are three of the most balanced and reasonable people on Fox News… not to mention, of course, Greta. :-)

The media is going to do their level best to destroy Bachmann the way they’ve dismissed and marginalized Palin. She’s gonna have to be better prepared to deal with these sorts of things so she doesn’t come off as “the little woman” who is out of her depth. She isn’t. She is plenty qualified to run for President… light years ahead of the current moron that is “running” (into the ground) this country!

After the earlier posts I’m expecting my comments to be equally vilified, so I’m very appreciative of your “agree”! :-) There’s at least one person who sees this the way I did. I was so surprised to see “flake” comment is now “a thing”… good grief people. That’s nothing compared to what they done to other women in politics, particularly conservative woman. I SO hope she can develop a way to respond to this sort of thing that makes the katie courics and chris matthews of the world look stupid for asking the question!

Chris Wallace is a registered democrat and he must think that asking jerk questions is a way of being tough like his Daddy tried to be. Speaking of Mike Wallace, he has a lot to answer for regarding all that crap he pulled on 60 mins. Would Chris have the guts to ask Obama about 57 states? That gaff was enough right there to declare B.O. unqualified.

    • Anonymous

Whatever the question was… it would appear he “manned” up by immediately apologizing…

What in the world could he have asked?

      • Bella

He asked he if she was a flake? She was shocked by the question and she responded very well. He has been asking all the Candidates tough questions because he knows the other side will.

        • Anonymous

I have heard that same remark all over the MSM… I have heard him go head to head with many others…

If he apologized, and she accepted… how many have said far far worse about other Rep. and Female candidates and NEVER apologized.

Way too sensitive… Beside… bless her heart… once Micelle B. gets going… trust me… she will get a lot lot worse. I hope she has the mockzie (sp?) to push back.

Only the hard and hateful “left” name call & insult every single GOP candidate and every single prominent conservative as a matter of fact, its a tactic of the left to diminish opponents or the people they disagree with and to insult conservative women so that makes Chris’s question that much more outrageous as somehow giving vile libs some kind of credibility asking the Congresswoman that asanine question.

Chris definately “messed up” and made a fool of himself. I certainly don’t accept his apology and don’t intend to waste a Sunday minute ever watching his show again.

I listened to the interview..Chris Wallace did not call Mrs Bachmann a “flake”, he was echoing what others have been saying about her..I understand completely and did not think anything of it..as a matter of fact IMO he was giving her the opportunity to defend herself…that is how I see it.

  • Sniper308

I’m a professional in my field. Maybe Mr. Wallace considers himself a professional in his field. However, his question, as presented to the congresswoman, was clearly unprofessional. I know what he was trying to ask. I understand what he was getting at. Regardless, his question, as asked, was on par with what I’d expect from speech-class student at a junior high school. Inexcusable. I have no idea what possessed Mr. Wallace to formulate his question in such a manner. It was rude, to be blunt. He’s gravely naive if he thinks an apology lets him off the hook for something so immaturely stupid. I do realize he will probably never read this (let along take my words to heart), nor will you, but the situation bothered me enough to the point of my deliberately seeking out a respectable venue via which I could air my displeasure with Mr. Wallace’s lack of finesse.

I was shocked to hear Chris Wallace say this to Michele Bachmann. No respect. I can’t help but wonder what kind of soup his wife had prepared him for lunch.

Chris Wallace has always been professional and fair at his job. I have to believe the “flake” question was intended to give Michele Bachmann voice to respond to negative press about her. Could he have worded it a bit differently?, maybe so, but doubtful there was any real damage.

I used to think that Chris was one of the two best interviewers on Fox, this includes you. But, when you have a top flight candidate, and you get down to “Gee the insiders in the Beltway think you are a Flake, how do you respond?”; it is an indictment against the interviewer and not the candidate. The Beltway insiders have given us a 14.5 trillion dollar debt with no end in sight. Do you really think WE CARE HOW THE BELTWAY INSIDERS THINK!!!
