As you may recall, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assasinated in December 0f 2007. On many occasions I spoke to her — several times on the phone to Pakistan just days before she was murdered and on camera for ON THE RECORD at 10pm days shortly before she returned to Pakistan after about 8 years of exile.
Off camera in our last meeting, I asked her more than once why she wanted to go back to Pakistan since it was obvious that her life was at risk. She said she wanted to help her people and that she really cared about her country. She knew it was dangerous but she thought she it worth the risk. She told me that she wanted to bring a true democracy to Pakistan – a country where no civilian leader has served out his term. If her husband, now the President, does serve out his 5 year term, he will be the first.
Why do I mention it? Just a movie tip…
