Tomorrow one anchor from every network will be having lunch at the White House with President Obama. Shep is going from Fox.
First, of course I would go if I were invited – unless you all convinced me that it is too cozy for the media to be dining at this time with the President (or any President.) I think the lunch would be interesting.
Second, President Obama is not the first to invite the anchors from every network to lunch at the White House prior to a speech. This has been going on for a long time. It is, I suppose, a tradition, but I don’t know how far back it goes.
Third, let’s face it, this lunch at the White House is an effort to schmooze the media on the taxpayer’s dime. It is not simply a briefing – you don’t have to serve lunch for a briefing. You could bring everyone into a conference room and just talk. The President – just as prior Presidents – is attempting to massage the media to look favorably upon his proposal.
Fourth it is a chance to ask the President specific questions about his proposal.
