As a result of my job, I have been to many places around the world and here in the USA, and met many people — and I hope you know that I feel like I bring you along with me via ON THE RECORD at 10pm and GretaWire. I show you pictures, videos and I blog and you respond…so yes, we travel together.
One of the many places I have gone (and taken you) is Haiti. I have now been there several times – some with ON THE RECORD at 10pm, and some with Samaritans Purse and Reverend Franklin Graham on vacation / weekend time. As you know, Haiti got hit with a devastating earthquake a few years ago and 300,000 people were killed (just to put in perspective, that is 100 times 9/11.) Right after the earthquake I made a few quick trips (including with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) and I have continued to go back with Reverend Graham and Samaritans Purse.
It is impossible to put into words how much Haiti has suffered. Children without families, homes, clothes or food currently roam the streets. You drive down the broken streets and see naked children just wandering. I am told that some of the children you now see roaming the streets scrounging for food are children of women who were raped in the displaced persons’ camp post earthquake and either the mothers have no means to raise the children or don’t want them because of how they were conceived.
In these times of crisis and great despair, Samaritans Purse is always one of the first – if not the first – to jump into action to help. Samaritans Purse is a well oiled operation – ready to help anyone, and ready for anything. They do charity all over the planet and I have seen it with my own eyes. Samaritans Purse can seemingly do anything, for anyone, and any time and they sure want to help. Each person who works there has a giant heart and a willingness to work 24/7 …just to help. When you see what they do, and when you see the great suffering by many, you have only one thought and that is, ‘how can I help, too?’
So…now to the pictures below and a bit of an inside story. Because of some things I have been doing with Samaritans Purse, they have honored me by naming their newest orphanage after me. The new orphanage building is currently under construction (it is really going to be something!) and should be completed in a few months. The new building will be able to sleep about 100 children (and of course the adults) and includes the sleeping areas, education areas, kitchen, dining area, etc. I have been to the buildings where the children are currently living (about 75) and while it is rugged, Samaritans Purse is feeding them, clothing them and giving them an education….and getting them ready for the excitement of their new building opening.
You may recall here on GretaWire some pics I posted a few months ago when I was in Haiti for Operation Christmas Child and the boys and girls in the Greta Home had just gotten their new uniforms — many were getting clothes for the first time. In their news clothes, they were very handsome and pretty….and very proud and so was I. Here is a pic from their first day in their uniforms, and the first time any of them had ever, ever, ever received a gift:
They ARE cute, aren’t they? And just to give them a chance is a giant thrill for everyone involved — and that includes those of you who have over the years been so generous to donate.
My husband and I recently ordered laptops for each of the children so that they can learn to read, do math etc. and the laptops will hopefully arrive by the opening of the new building. These are very special laptops for children in difficult areas of the world and will give them an enormous boost in their education. These laptops are not toys – they can do what my desktop can do in the office at Fox. These are extraordinary laptops in a very small package. These laptops will give them a chance and chance their lives…and each child gets his own personal laptop. These laptops actually are given directly to the kids and not the orphanage so that they own something and can take pride it it.

So now to the pics below and an explanation…
This morning Reverend Graham sent me pics of the new bus for our orphanage. It is with great pride that I post the pics for you to see. It really is fun to help and be part of a project like this. But while the bus has my name on it, you know that this is not about me. I am a very, very, very small part of this. Help can only happen because we all work together, we all contribute – whether it is labor or a few dollars.
By the way, if you want to see more projects Samaritans Purse does around the world, click here to go to the Samaritans Purse website.
Finally I know that some of you may be thinking why is this being done in Haiti and not here in the USA. Well….help is being done in the USA by Samaritans Purse and by many good hearted Americans. I help with projects here in the USA, too. This posting is simply about one project. And yes, there is a lot of need in many places.
