I am responsible for everything I say and do.
I am not responsible for everything everyone else says and does — including postings here on GretaWire.
I actually get emails from people wanting me to answer for what others say or think.
I don’t monitor what people post – with the exception of a software filter that is supposed to block porn and racism but which is certainly not perfect. I don’t scroll through comments and delete postings that I don’t like.
I don’t monitor the postings because I believe in the First Amendment – whether I agree with an opinion or not. As I am sure you have noticed, nasty stuff is written on this blog about me and I don’t delete it for First Amendment reasons.
The First Amendment is extremely broad — including the right unfortunately for people to say hurtful things about others. Of course the First Amendment is not without limits – it is not wrong to stop someone from falsely yelling fire in a crowded theater – but it is broad and for reason.
The First Amendment is meant to give liberty to a minority opinion since a popular or majority opinion needs no particular protection as it is not oppressed or limited. It is the majority opinion.
The First Amendment exists because we don’t want to live in a society where there is a police state when it comes to thought and opinion — whether we like the thought and opinion or not.
