Texas honors student jailed for missing too much school…do you agree with the punishment?

Texas honors student Diane Tran, 17, was thrown in jail for 24 hours because she missed too many days of school. The 11th grader’s only alleged crime is truancy, a misdemeanor.

So why has Tran been missing school? She has been working two jobs to support her siblings since her parents divorced and moved away. She works full-time for a day cleaner and part-time for a wedding planner…all while taking advanced classes.

The judge who sentenced the teen to jail time says the case is bigger than Tran:”If you let one run loose, what are you gonna do with the rest of ’em? Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence.”

So what do you think? Should the judge have sent the 11th grader to jail? Post your thoughts!
