Texas honors student Diane Tran, 17, was thrown in jail for 24 hours because she missed too many days of school. The 11th grader’s only alleged crime is truancy, a misdemeanor.
So why has Tran been missing school? She has been working two jobs to support her siblings since her parents divorced and moved away. She works full-time for a day cleaner and part-time for a wedding planner…all while taking advanced classes.
The judge who sentenced the teen to jail time says the case is bigger than Tran:”If you let one run loose, what are you gonna do with the rest of ‘em? Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence.”
So what do you think? Should the judge have sent the 11th grader to jail? Post your thoughts!
