While the nation looks for (is starving for?)stability and certainty….so we can best plan our nation’s future and our own…the President is about to suggest a one year (temporary) middle class tax cut….and a few weeks ago gave a temporary (2 years) reprieve from deportation for certain people here in our country illegally. The GOP, although supporting a different tax cut scheme, likewise want a temporary policy. Temporary? One year. Why are policies temporary no matter what they are? Temporary does not help. How about long term? I don’t know about you…but I think Americans can adjust to just about anything but when politicians keep frantically moving the goal post in election years to gain votes it makes it impossible for each of us to make long term decisions regardless of income level. Long term decisions are important for college planning, buying of big consumer products like washing machines and cars, renting or buying a home etc. With their tossed out political bait of election years – temporary plans – we have to guess what the politicians’ next plan for us is and that is impossible. Leadership (both parties) includes giving the nation a strong direction so that planning can be done in families…not this wishy washy stuff of election years. And don’t tell me it’s hard or that it is the other party (I am sick of those excuses, are you?)….remember, politicians ask for the job and say they can do it.
Don’t forget, President Reagan and Pres Bush 41 regularly got things through a Democratic Congress…and President Bill Clinton regularly got things through a Republican Congress. That proves it can be done.
What do you think?
