Below from an FNC colleague -

Gov. Christie delivered remarks at the Brookings Institution and took questions.  In his opening remarks he mentioned in passing that he has not yet been invited to speak at the convention in Tampa.  He also made a few remarks on drug rehabilitation, noting that if you’re pro-life you have to believe every life is precious.  When asked about the Supreme Court ruling in regards to medicare he said it was nice to see that the court still ruled extortion is illegal.  He also spoke about leadership saying you can lead by being an enigma or aloof, but only by being yourself.  He said he would not support a stimulus to bring in public sector jobs.  Several highlights below.  Please note the restrictions in red.

On the convention in Tampa –
10:06:51 and we came to agreement in late spring on a 10 percent income tax credit, would exempt any business income that they made from schedule C on fed returns and would apply equally to all those ppl under 400000 and increase earned income tax credit
10:07:31 was going to mean everybody employed would be getting tax relief over 3 years, we had agreement until normal politics set back in when the senate president went back to his caucus they decided what was more important was that it was more impt for me not to be able to go to RNC in Tampa and say I got a tax cut
10:08:16 unfortunately this was reverse to bad politics, going to have to fight about this over the summer, looking forward to it, call them back to special session, on july 2 gave a speech on importance of bipartisan compromise and making state more competitive
10:08:58 speech I have not yet been invited to give, at a convention I’ll attend but don’t even know if I’ll be speaking

On drug addiction treatment –
10:25:45 put forward that the war on drugs while well intentioned has been a failure, wondering why they commit crimes again you can make argument no one should try drugs in first place, I’m in that camp
10:26:29 for others the first time they try they become addict, they need treatment, for all first time nonviolent drug users make treatment mandatory, if you’re prolife as I am you can’t be prolife just in the womb, every life is precious and every one of God’s creatures can be redeemed and they won’t be if we ignore

On leadership –
10:40:40 we should be listening to voices that say just use party doctrine, should be telling ppl how we think or feel, I love this job but I’ve got plenty of great titles, us atty, husband, father and son, if it means I lose so be it, but at least I’ll be able to tell my children spent my time doing something significant, wont be able to say wonder who this guy and what he thought
10:41:38 you cant lead by being a mystery, an enigma, aloof or being program, lead by being yourself, when they trust you they’ll follow you

On the medicare ruling –
10:49:21 arrogance of fed govt they believe they can craft a program that will work for everybody, leave to states, way I can administer is diff than the way barbour in MS or Perry in TX, idea that president would say afraid we’ll take healthcare away from children, what in my record tells you I would do that
10:50:08 education side, think Duncan has tried to do some positive things to empower states, but manage broad policy from DC in a school district in Tyler, TX and NJ is quite a challenge have a to have quite an ego to think you can do that

On if he would support a stimulus for public employees –
10:51:21 No, always a temporary bandaid, stimulus supposed to hire teachers, I was left with a billion dollar hole, had to cut a billion dollars, fact is unless we’re going to federalize states you give us money we hire ppl then localties are on state are on hook to pay for them

On the mindset of always trying to be reelected –
11:02:33 you have to talk honestly to ppl cant say this won’t hurt, have to say this will stink going to hurt together going to have a better day at the end of that, that’s the other thing that sustains it candor w/ ppl, with too many elected officials obsessed w/ reelection willing to do anything to keep their job, not who you want in executive position, beware of the person who will do anything to get elected, b/c they’ll do anything to get elected
11:03:57 let the next guy deal w/ it, creeped into political insulting if it won’t blow up on my watch let it go, it’s what got us to this spot, next explosion going to be difficult to contain, look at europe, forget it will be a picnic compared to here ramificaitions for entire world will be graver than anything in europe, sustainability is say to ppl
