Couple of points:
Obama campaign in Chicago tells me they will wait until Gov Romney formally announces Ryan as the pick before they put out on-the-record satements.
Nevertheless, a senior Democrat tells me the attack plan is pretty straight forward: Obama allies will come out hard in the next few hours to paint Ryan as someone “who will do anything to protect tax cuts for the wealthiest,” per this senior Democratic aide.
This Democrat said the Obama camp will obviously make the spending cuts in the Ryan budget front and center, but will also make a big deal out of the fact that the Congressman “opposed Simpson Bowles because it had revenue in it” and was not willing to raise any taxes.
This Democatic aide added the party will also charge this says a lot about Romney struggling to get his own base fired up on his own. The aide claimed this move by Romney is a “capitulation to the extreme in his party.”
The Democratic also pressed the notion that Romney’s base is still more motivated by sweeping out the President, so this move is a recognition that “only 35 percent of his supporters were voting FOR him” in recent polls, as opposed to voting against Obama.
The other line to expect from Democrats is that Ryan is an “ideologue” not a reformer.
