Voter ID Laws as Part of Party Platform

Civil Rights Icon, Ambassador Andrew Young Calls on RNC and DNC to BOTH Adopt Free and Accessible Voter ID

Young says, “Voter IDs must be Free and Accessible”
Atlanta, GA – Today, the GOP platform committee officially adopted language supporting states that have passed voter ID and proof of citizenship laws. Ambassador Andrew Young, who was instrumental in passing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, issued the following statement:
“I’m against voter fraud in any form and I have long supported a national voter ID card. But ID cards need not — and must not — restrict voting rights in any way, shape or form. Therefore, voter ID cards must be free and readily accessible to everyone in our democracy. Otherwise we have lost our democracy once again.”
“In 1965, when we passed the Voting Rights Act, it was the era of poll taxes and literacy tests. Republicans and Democrats both knew what was wrong and had the courage to work together to fix it. Once again that Coalition of Conscience can make Voter ID cards a solution, not a problem.”
“I call upon both Republicans and Democrats to work with us to have a national ID card that is free and accessible. President Lyndon Johnson and Martin Luther King recognized was the greatest step for society was that short step into the voting booth. If we are to be true to their courage and conviction, we must make that short step as easy as possible. Surely, if we can land a spaceship on Mars, we can certainly put a voter ID card in the hand of every eligible voter.”
Ambassador Andrew Young is actively campaigning for an updated Voting Rights Act, or a VRA 2.0 to address the many changes that have happened to voter requirements since the first Voting Rights Act of 1965. Voter turnout has been declining with the United States ranking 139th out of 172 democracies around the world.
