(THIS IS REALLY BEHIND THE SCENES)
As you might imagine, trying to find a place to sit and listen to the speeches inside the arena was not easy if you were in the media, and not a delegate with a reserved seat. You could go to the media areas where each was carrying its own network but then you were not guaranteed you would hear the speeches since anchors and pundits spoke often over the speeches and I needed and wanted to listen to each speech without interruption so that I was best prepared for OTR.
So where was the best spot to go to get the raw feed of the speeches? You won’t believe it…but it was the women’s restroom in the outer ring of the arena. The speeches were piped directly into the women’s restroom. Since I know the voices of the speakers, and thus did not need to see them to take notes for our OTR , I simply pulled a chair into the large women’s restroom and listened to a good bit of the convention in there. I grabbed a big crate and used it as a desk for my ipad and phones. I am sure it seemed odd as women first walked in …but after explaining they all agreed I had a good idea. I could hear the speeches better than if I had been in the arena in a delegate seat since the speakers’ microphone was piped directly into the restroom.
