It is no secret that the country is in trouble — and the biggest problem is the inability to even sit down and work out our differences and work towards good, smart solutions for our big problems. Both parties are guilty. Yes, I know, fingers can be pointed at individuals and individual actions, but the bottom line is that blame doesn’t solve problems. While few want to admit it, both parties are up to their eyeballs in political warfare.
The only time we seem to be able to work together is when something catastrophic happens – whether it be 9/11 or some natural disaster. I know there are big differences between the two parties — and each party thinks the other is a demon — but if we can work together during a crisis, can’t we work together and find some common ground in calmer times?
A good start, while no one knows who will win Tuesday, is to make a pact to work with the next President whoever that might be. And the President who is elected needs to remember that he doesn’t just represent the people who voted for him but for everyone. This does not mean we should not have a vigorous debate on issues and that we can’t have differences — it means we should stop the food fight and at least talk to each other.
I don’t know about you, but there are some ideas the Republicans suggest that I think are wise to look at and consider and likewise there are some ideas the Democrats suggest that I think are wise to look at and consider. Surely I am not the only one who sees good ideas raised by both parties. I bet if you look hard enough you can find an idea suggested by someone who is a political opponent that may be worth thinking about. (I would love you to post an example.)
Yes, I know, I am dreaming.
