An 11-year-old boy caught with a gun at his suburban Salt Lake City elementary school told police he brought the weapon for protection in case of an attack similar to the one in Newtown, Connecticut.
Another child at West Kearns Elementary School says the boy threatened her with the weapon. “At recess, he pointed a gun to my head and said he was going to kill me,” said classmate Isabel Rios.
The boy’s parents may not have realized their son had the gun, claiming the .22 caliber handgun was left at the boy’s home by a relative and the boy must have found the gun and taken it to school. No one was injured and the unidentified boy has been expelled from school.
