Below is an email I received from FNC’s Ed Henry about the Marine Jon Hammar:

Subject: for urgent: Obama admin on Jon Hammar case

Just fyi, I asked Jay Carney about the Jon Hammar case today (former US Marine now stuck in Mexican prison for some four months). Carney said he knew nothing about the case (that is on-cam) but then I did get this statement from a State Department official:

Jon Hammar was arrested on August 15 in Matamoros and charged with possession of a restricted firearm. The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros has been providing consular services to Mr. Hammar since we were notified of his arrest on August 16.

Since the arrest, we have been in frequent contact with Mr. Hammar, as well as with his family in the United States. Consular officials have visited Mr. Hammar in prison four times, the most recent visits occurring on November 29 and December 13. They also communicate by phone with him periodically between visits, most recently on December 18th.

We take the safety and well being of our incarcerated U.S. citizens very seriously. When Mr. Hammar was threatened in prison by other inmates, consular officials arranged with prison officials for Mr. Hammar to be moved away from the general prison population. Mr. Hammar is now in a separate area where he has constant contact with prison personnel.

When we learned that physical restraints were being used, we raised the issue with prison authorities, who agreed to stop using the restraints.

Consulate General Matamoros has had regular exchanges with the prison, and has received judicial summaries from the court overseeing his case. We will continue to monitor Mr. Hammar’s safety and well being throughout his detention, and continue to work with Mexican authorities to address any concerns regarding the progress of his case and treatment.
