I was in Germany interviewing President Bush 41 on the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down (it came down during his Presidency.) I was thrilled to be able to interview him about the Wall on the anniverary (although he is so modest that getting him to take credit for anything is nearly impossible….)
Off camera we were just talking and he asked me about my trips to North Korea (he had followed them on ON THE RECORD at 10pm.) I lamented that it seemed impossible that North Korea would abandon the nuclear bomb and become some day an ally of the United States.
He said….you never know…he told me that if someone had told him in September 1944 when Japan shot down his TBF Avenger torpedo bomber that some day USA and Japan would be allies, he would have told that person that he was nuts and yet today we are allies (and have been for years!) President Bush even visited Japan as President of the United States.
In other words, President Bush was telling me anything is possible and we should never give up trying to make things better. This should inspire us all.
