It is the map that everyone has been talking about for weeks! From gun owners to lawmakers to burglars…everyone has an opinion about a New York newspaper’s interactive map locating gun owners. The Journal News coming under heavy fire for publishing the map, even posting armed guards at its office in response to threats.
The Journal News announced tonight it is removing the interactive map from its website. But publisher Janet Hasson says her decision was not because of the critics or the threats. So why the change of heart? In a letter to readers, Hasson writes, in part: “The database has been public for 27 days and we believe those who wanted to view it have done so already. As well, with the passage of time, the data will become outdated and inaccurate.”
And get this – the Journal News will keep a snapshot of the map on its website.
So what do you think? Did the Journal News do the right thing? Post your thoughts!
