Senator Dianne Feinstein

Urgent: Feinstein says issues surrounding Burr’s threat of a hold on Brennan for DCI “is being worked out.”

Off-cam with Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) after the hearing.

First, she says they will hold a classified hearing with John Brennan Tuesday, but won’t vote that day. The committee vote will probably be behind closed doors next Thursday (February 14).

Feinstein on Burr’s threat:

I knew that was coming. It’s my understanding that it is being worked out.”

* Feinstein says the committee got Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) justifications last night on the Alwaki killing. But they have asked for eight additional OLC opinions on other cases.

Feinstein on how the opinion process works when setting up a kill of a terror suspect:

I think the process set up internally is a solid process. I think there’s an abscence of knowing who makes the decisions…

* She says she wants to make it “transparent and identifiable.” She adds that Intelligence Committee staff have been to Langley 30 times to review the process.

Feinstein on the intel justifying a kill:

The intelligence used is very careful and very good.

Reports about collateral damage spelled out in the papers is wrong.

We ought to correct it…but we can’t.

* Feinstein says she is confident that “collateral damage” with kills is in the single digits. When asked if she was comfortable with that figure, she replied, “I’m comfortable with it unitl I’m not comfortable with it.”
