How bad does it have to get for the coverage this story needs? This is a crisis. Mexican drug cartels dispatching agents deep into the United States. ON THE RECORD at 10pm has pounded and pounded on this story — we have gone to Mexico, interviewed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton there, gone to the border, interviewed border Governors Rick Perry and Jan Brewer, gone to the border with Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano etc.
For reasons unclear, this story has been largely ignored by many news organizations. Too dangerous? Too short sighted? I have never figured out why it has been ignored since not only is it an exploding crisis but it is not as expensive for news organizations to follow as is Afghanistan, Iraq etc. There is a war going on in Mexico, right next door, and now reports that cartels have dispatched agents deep inside the USA.
Cartels dispatch agents deep inside US
By MICHAEL TARM | Associated Press –
CHICAGO (AP) — Mexican drug cartels whose operatives once rarely ventured beyond the U.S. border are dispatching some of their most trusted agents to live and work deep inside the United States — an emboldened presence that experts believe is meant to tighten their grip on the world’s most lucrative narcotics market and maximize profits.
If left unchecked, authorities say, the cartels’ move into the American interior could render the syndicates harder than ever to dislodge and pave the way for them to expand into other criminal enterprises such as prostitution, kidnapping-and-extortion rackets and money laundering.
Cartel activity in the U.S. is certainly not new. Starting in the 1990s, the ruthless syndicates became the nation’s No. 1 supplier of illegal drugs, using unaffiliated middlemen to smuggle cocaine, marijuana and heroin beyond the border or even to grow pot here.
