Taking Tamerlan off the watch list was stupid or worse, dangerous!
Here is what we know: Tamerlan Tsarnaev gets “ping’d” on a watch list when he left the USA in January 2012 for Russia but not when he returned:
“….[w]hen [Tamerlan Tsarnaev] returned from Russia six months later, he had already been automatically downgraded in the border database because there was no new information that required him to continue to get extra attention…”
There was no new information? Of course no new information…he was in Russia for 6 months and we were not paying attention to him. We had no new information because we weren’t looking for any. We just let it go and ignored him.
No new information when we are not even looking for new information was a stupid (and dangerous) reason to remove Tamerlan from the watch list.
Think about it….and to use an extreme example to make my point, we went years without knowing if Osama Bin Laden was dead or alive….we had no information about Bin Laden….so should he have been taken off a watch list? Of course not. Under the Tamerlan standard above (no new information), Bin Laden would have been removed.
So what are we seeing? CYA
