Note from my FNC colleague Jonathan Wachtel:
Syrian Ambassador Ja’afari’s remarks focused a great deal on blaming Israel for the ills of the region, accusing Israel of taking advantage of Arab discord for its own gain. He also pleaded for attention on the plight of the Palestinians, who he claimed suffer while the world plays into Israel’s hands by focusing on Syria. Similar rallying cries were made by Saddam Hussein’s government when facing military action from the West. Saddam Hussein resorted to firing scud missiles at Israel to try to draw the country into war and bring the Arab world to his side. The obsession on Israel can been interpreted as a similar strategy and advanced warning that Syrian retaliation against any Western military action would include attacking Israel.
