One of the most important decisions our leaders make is about military strikes (an act of war.)
It is such an important decision that even the staff of ON THE RECORD at 10pm came off our holiday last night (we had last night off having taped a SPECIAL for you so that we could have a long weekend), and did a live show. We saw that as part of our jobs. Jobs are not just about personal pleasure. It was the responsible thing to do – for our employer and for you. You would do it, too. If the nation is facing such an important decision as a military strike, as members of the media, sitting on a beach or going to the movies – or yes, playing golf - seems wrong, doesn’t it?
So…fast forward to today.
The President and Vice President are contemplating a military strike in Syria. The President made a statement, and then the President and Vice President changed their clothes and headed for the golf course. Really? golf? How about calling world leaders? talking to families of military?
Meanwhile, the House and the Senate are on a 5 week vacation - they call it an ‘August recess’ but it extends 9 days into September (that is almost 1/3 of September!) It is hardly just an ‘August recess.’
The President says this military strike is extremely important decision. It is about people being gassed by their President and will now be debated by the House and the Senate….so…are the House and the Senate cutting their vacation short and quickly coming back to Washington NOW for that robust debate? Nope…..they will be back September 10 at 2pm as originially planned….in the meantime, it is off to the golf course for the President.
As an aside, and separate from the gravity of the decision to conduct a military strike or not, work ethics are set at the top. If you want young people to aspire to doing their jobs well and being responsible, you need to set an example! The President and the Congress need to set an example – a good one!
