Subject: For urgent Fw: Reuters: USS Nimitz carrier group rerouted for possible help with Syria
A senior US defense official, confirms that the USS Nimitz is on the move toward the E Mediterranean from the Indian Ocean having been retasked to possibly assist with a strike on Syria. The US aircraft carrier group has 4 destroyers and is currently in the vicinity of the Red Sea. It was supposed to be relieved in the Persian Gulf when the USS Truman arrived last week. At that time the Pentagon decided to keep 2 carrier groups in the Gulf just in case. Normally the Nimitz would have been sent home via Asia since it is a West Coast based carrier group out of Seattle.
The USS Kearsarge may also be called upon to help with Syria. It has Harrier platforms and was heavily relied upon during the Libya conflict.
What is apparent is that while Congress debates, Pentagon planners have gone back to the drawing board in terms of potential targetting and more Navy assets are being moved into position to help with possible strike plans.
