Sec. Kerry: “Nothing focuses the mind like the prospect of a hanging”

See below from my FNC colleague Justin Fishel:

“Nothing focuses the mind like the prospect of a hanging.”  That is what Secretary John Kerry just said about Russian proposal to pursue a diplomatic option and help secure the chemical weapons in Syria.  “It’s the credible threat of force that brought this regime to even acknowledge they have a chemical arsenal,” Kerry added.  And he said the military threat has “motivated others to event talk about a real and credible action.”

Kerry said president Obama will look at the proposal when it comes, but cautioned the Russians that “this can’t be a process of delay or avoidance.”  He said securing the chemical weapons in Syria, which Fox News has reported amounts 1,000 tons of poorly maintained and widely dispersed sarin gas, would be “exceedingly difficult.”  He said the U.S. will not wait long for those proposals and that any action on part of the Russians has to be “swift.”

LOG/KERRY

10:24:31 this can’t be a process of delay or avoidance and it has to be tangible and it is exceedingly difficult- we are waiting for those proposals- Obama will look at them but not waiting for long- it has to be swift – can not be a stalling tactic

10:25:32 make no mistake why this has any potential legs at all

10:25:41 lot of people focuses the mind like the prospect of a hanging – it’s the credible threat of force that brought this regime to even acknowledge they have a chemical arsenal

10:26:14 it has motivated others to even talk about a real and credible action

10:26:24 so how do you maintain that pressure we have to make sure they know we will not fall for stalling tactics

10:26:39 its only because of the threat of force that we are talking today and it is important that the congress stand with the president
