Notes on top are from FNC colleague Shayla Bezdrob:
Federal sources confirm that Aaron Alexis went to the shooting range Sunday night. They say the story below is ‘pretty accurate’
Earlier today sources confirmed (also in Urgent) Sharpshooters of Lorton as the store where Alexis purchased his weapon.
ADDING to this:
Sources also tell me that autopsies are underway on the victims.
They tell this is what happens next: The Medical Examiner will pull the slugs from each deceased and send them to the ballistics lab for testing. The lab will compare the slugs (found in the victims) to the weapons believed to have been used by Alexis. As you know, we have confirmed that he had a shotgun and may have acquired a handgun in the course of his rampage. The precise number of weapons used by Alexis is not known at the moment I’m told. So they will use the slugs they pull to match to the weapons at the scene.
As for Alexis’ autopsy – unclear when his autopsy is happening exactly or whether it’s happened already. The Feds have no ‘shooting incident reports’ on their side (meaning, when an FBI agent shoots a person, a “shooting incident report” is filed). They confirm once again that “one of the DC cops shot him”
AP: Navy Yard gunman visited range day before shooting
WASHINGTON (AP) — An attorney for a Virginia gun store says the man identified as the Navy Yard gunman bought a shotgun and ammunition there the day before the rampage.
Michael Slocum said in an email that Aaron Alexis visited Sharpshooters Small Arms Range on Sunday. He says Alexis rented a rifle, bought bullets and used the range. He then bought a shotgun and 24 shells. Authorities say he had a shotgun with him when he entered a building at the Navy Yard on Monday and started firing, killing 12 people.
Slocum says the store ran a federal background check on Alexis and it was approved. Law enforcement visited the range Monday, reviewing video and store records.
The store is located about 15 miles from the Navy Yard.
