Debate from the House floor on proposed reductions to the food stamp program. Vote coming later this afternoon.
House floor LIVE on REM 238
House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK)
There is no denying that SNAP provides important support to many Americans who are struggling. But it’s not meant to keep people at the bottom.
The bill waves the ability of states to wave the work requirement for able-bodied Americans.
Lucas: ***The bill*** It will save American taxpayers $40 billion.
Lucas: It shouldn’t be this hard to pass a bill that ensures all citizens of this country have enough to eat, and that’s what the farm bill does.
Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH)
Fudge: This bill will abandon 5.7 million people when they need us the most.
Rep. Mike Conway (R-TX)
Conway: Our votes is not to take millions of people off food stamps, it is to ensure efficiency.
Conway: We will close loopholes that have allowed people to take advantage of the system.
Fudge: 5,000 active duty families could be kicked off food stamps if this bill passes as it is today.
