Note below from FNC Chad Pergram:
Urgent: Cruz now begins speech on Senate floor about defunding health care
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on the floor.
Keep in mind, Cruz can speak only until tomorrow around late morning or midday, when the Senate is REQUIRED to have a procedural vote to invoke cloture (or cut off debate) on the effort to call up the House bill to fund the government and strike funding for the health care law.
Because there is a finite period of time before the Senate moves on to something else, THIS IS NOT A FILIBUSTER. It could LOOK a lot like a Strom Thurmond/Jimmy Stewart “talking” filibuster. But it really isn’t nor should be referred to as such. That’s because Cruz is NOT BLOCKING ANYTHING.
As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said yesterday, the Senate is on “autopilot,” flying toward tomorrow’s procedural vote.
We are led to believe that Cruz could talk for a while. But that stalls nothing.
Cruz is joined near his desk by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT).
