Below was sent to me by the publisher of this new book – some of you might be interested in this book.
What caught my attention is that (I think) I covered this murder 15 years ago when I was at CNN…..and now the author has discovered that there is much more to the murder than most thought.
A new book about the brutal murder 15 years ago of gay college student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming is upending our understanding of the circumstances surrounding what has become known as the most infamous anti-gay hate crime in American history. It’s called THE BOOK OF MATT: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard. The author, Stephen Jimenez, is an award-winning journalist and is also gay. When he first went to Laramie in 2000 to do background research on a screenplay about the Shepard murder, he had no reason to doubt the narrative that had taken root in the media. Jimenez soon discovered there was much more to the story, and spent the next 13 years untangling it. His research included interviews with more than 100 sources on both sides of the law. He discovered that crystal meth, not “gay panic”, was the driving force behind the vicious attack. In fact Aaron McKinney, the man who pistol whipped Shepard to death, was himself bisexual. Moreover, contrary to news reports and courtroom testimony, he and Shepard had a history. This is a brave book that illustrates how quickly the truth can get lost when a tragedy is politicized.
Aaron Hicklin, editor in chief of Out magazine, praised THE BOOK OF MATT in The Advocate and Rod Dreher praised Jimenez’s work in The American Conservative, suggesting that truth in the media is something liberals and conservatives can agree on.
Customers at Amazon who have bought and read the book are calling this true crime drama a real page turner, and a healthy discussion is heating up online.
