Subject: Urgent: The “Mini” Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Tentative deal for Tuesday
A couple of things to watch for early tomorrow morning…I’ll send out something more detailed later.
The House GOP Conference meets at 9 am et. The leadership is expected to walk members through the tentative framework. House Republicans are NOT expected to like this at all. We expect a lengthy meeting…and NO HOUSE GOP LEADERSHIP PRESSER afterwards.
House Democrats huddle at 9 am..but we do expect a presser from them at 10 am.
The Senate Republican Conference will meet at 11 am to get an update on this as well.
Keep in mind, this is FAR from a done deal. There are just not policy tripwires which could detonate this plan…but more specifically, procedural hurdles in both the House and Senate which could make this very hard to complete by Thursday…especially if Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) or other tea party affiliated senators decide to filibuster.
Moreover, there is NO GUARANTEE that the House will accept this plan..without potentially Ping-Ponging the bill back to the Senate. That could also burn up more time. In addition, the WORST CASE SCENARIO could come if the House can’t shepherd this bill to passage…because it can’t get the votes. Some are already likening this vote to the fabled TARP vote which melted down amid the financial crisis in September, 2008. That triggered a market selloff of 777 points, the largest single-point drop in the history of the Dow.
Regardless, even if it doesn’t fail, the House is hopping mad about having to possibly “eat” what the Senate sends it…and the acrimony between Senate Republicans and House Republicans has risen to an all-time high.
