I talk to Senators and Members of the House every day and have been for years. I know them. I do not remember one time, in all the years, and in all the conversations, when I thought “this Senator or Representative doesn’t care about his / her job or constituents.” My experience and recollection is different. Each cares – whether you agree with that person or not politically, each cares. Republicans care and Democrats care. That has been my experience.
What is so disheartening is that together, they don’t seem to care. Their actions individually show care, but collectively their actions are grossly insensitive.
Best example? They (not you, not I) set the deadline for themselves of funding of the government to September 30, 2013 and then they let us pass it – they ignore the obvious. This created great hardship for many. They all knew it was happening…they knew September 30 would occur….so why did they take a 5 week vacation / recess beginning early August? Would you have done that? Besides a simple failure to do their jobs, it was grossly insensitive. The add to it by making us watch their insipid and childish name calling behavior and then there is their blame game. I have never seen so many people claim no responsibility for personal failure. Remember, they asked for those jobs and they told us they could do them. They each said – at some point – they would go to Washington and fix it. So, how about it?
And of course, there is now. They are all ’5-highing’ that there is a deal. That is not true. That is a myth. There is no deal. It is a postponement. You postpone when you have not done your work on time. They postponed the shutdown until January 15 and the debt ceiling problem until February 7. That is simply not a deal. That is putting off the problem.
And here is another thing: Senate goes on recess next week (again.) Even if individuals are not part of the few tasked with creating a budget, and even if some have constituent work back home, is that a message to send the rest of America? Recess? Images matter…they send a message….they show if you care (or not.)
And get ready for this one: Christmas holidays. If they have not done their work — resolved the January 15 / February 7 matters — will they take just one day for Christmas? or two week holiday? Remember, that is how we got the ‘cornhusker deal’ — they all wanted to go home for the holiday and they had not done their work. Hhm…
What are your thoughts?
