UPDATE: I would of course accept an apology…and would appreciate a correction on their website. That would be the right thing to do. I hope they learn that there is a difference between what was really said and what THEY want to hear.
Let me start by saying – there is ample evidence to prove Media Matters is DEAD wrong.
Take a look below at a headline from Media Matters that was just emailed to me. While I usually ignore most dopey stuff said about me or misquotes of me, this false headline needs to be corrected because it sits on the internet forever and some may believe this falsehood. As a consequence, it needs to be corrected and answered. I never said what Media Matters claims in its headline. Media Matters knows it or should know it (listen to the radio show!)
I am well aware that Media Matters “bread and butter” is to find fault with Fox or even slander Fox (that is how they raise their money) but this headline below is dead wrong (that is NOT what I said.)
What I said on the Ingraham radio show is (and you have heard me say it before and you can pull up the radio show and hear it yourself): grant the 12 million+ who are here in this country illegally the privilege to be here (give them something akin to a green card so they do not fear that in the middle of the night Immigration is going to show up and arrest them and separate them from their families and send them home.) My proposal makes them safe from deportation which is their biggest fear. I recognize that 97% of them are good people, good neighbors. I said that.
Under my proposal the 12 million plus illegally here now can hold jobs legally and they will pay taxes. They will be able to do whatever the rest of us can do — accept vote. They violated the law by being here illegally (which they knew) and there has to be some penalty. They also can’t just ‘jump the line’ as that would be unfair to those who came here, went through all the steps - did it lawfully.
But….that’s not the end of my proposal. There is a way that if any of the 12 million + here illegally want to get the right to vote, they can.
They will need to go home or whatever and simply follow the lawful path to citizenship that exists now and then they will have the privilege to vote like the rest of us. That’s what I said. Follow the rules, you can be a citizen and you get to vote. We have a path to citizenship — we get new citizens every day.
Regardless of whether they become citizens or not, whether they understake those extra steps or not, under my proposal, their children born here in USA will be full citizens with all the rights of citizens (of course.) That is what I said. That is NOT what Media Matters says I said in their headline.
Never have I sought to deprive citizens of the right to vote.
It is notable that what I said on her radio show is EXACTLY what I said right here on GretaWire on June 23, 2013 at 12:11pm when I posted my ONE PAGE immigration bill. You can go back and read what I said then (the same.)
Let me make plain to the point of redundancy: MEDIA MATTERS IS WRONG. I NEVER SAID WE SHOULD DENY VOTING RIGHTS TO CITIZENS WHO WERE PREVIOUSLY UNDOCUMENTED.
Media Matters is at best sloppy or at worst, trying to fit me into their hate of Fox. Anyone who would suggest I said something like their headline says wanted to smear me (or is goofy and needs to take the potato out of his ear!)
Here is the copy headline: (and I do accept their apology if they have the integrity to extend it)
