I find it annoying when politicians stand before a microphone calling something urgent — when they have know about it for months and went on vacation rather than handling it.
Today’s example? unemployment benefits extension.
And it is not a good excuse that to handle it earlier would have drawn opposition — it is drawing opposition now. too. Differences, by definition, always draw opposition but that is where leadership comes into play — the differences are worked out.
Handling it earlier may have provided enough time to work out a solution without a gun to one’s head and all the drama about it.
At a minimum, it would have sent a message that politicians really care and have their attention on important matters. I would like to see – for once – politicians make a sacrifice for everyday Americans.
