According to a senior US defense official, the US military in coordination with US intelligence agencies, carried out a missile strike in southern Somalia today. The US defense official would not confirm the details of the strike but confirmed that the target was a senior figure in Al Shabaab with ties to Al Qaeda. The missile strike took place this morning. There were no US ground forces involved.
According to witnesses on the ground a vehicle was struck by a missile fired from the air. US officials are still confirming the identities of those who were in the vehicle. “We’ll know more tomorrow,” the US defense official told Fox News.
The US recently sent a handful of conventional US troops to serve in Modagishu as advisers to the Somali military. They are the first US forces to be based in Somalia since Blackhawk down in the 1990s.
