Feinstein Statement on Situation in Ukraine
Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, issued the following statement on the escalating situation in Ukraine:
“It is clear to me the Russian military has taken control of the Crimean Peninsula—a brazen move in a geopolitically important area that threatens to escalate if not addressed immediately.
“This action is in clear violation of international law and will not be tolerated by the international community. It violates Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will be deeply destabilizing to Europe.
“I do not believe that threats mean much to Russia’s leadership. Instead I believe the recognition and satisfaction of the interests of both sides are paramount.
“Russia has major interests in the Crimean Peninsula. It is the country’s only warm-water military port and a major trading outpost. A majority of Crimean citizens are of Russian descent.
“The challenge now is to prevent escalation into southern and eastern Ukraine and begin a conversation with the Russian and Ukrainian governments in order to work out a solution that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty and recognizes Russia’s interests.
“Secretary Kerry is on his way to the region, and my hope is that he will be able to prevent further escalation of this crisis and bring about a solution.”
