Below is a fundraiser announcement….and the headliner, besides the candidate, is Oprah!  It is interesting that Oprah is now getting into Congressional races (she did endorse President Obama in 2008 which I think was her first dive into politics.)

OPRAH FUNDRAISER ANNOUNCED

Chatman Campaign on a Roll:

Over $200,000 Raised, Strong Grass Roots Support

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Community Leader, Lavern Chatman’s campaign for Congress in Virginia’s 8th district, made another big announcement today with the release of a date for a fundraising event with media and entertainment icon Oprah Winfrey. The event will be held in Arlington, VA on Saturday, April 5th.

Chatman said, “Oprah is a good friend and we both share a passion for empowering women and girls for leadership. “I’m delighted she is coming to town to help with my congressional campaign.”

Chatman said, “This event with Oprah is another big momentum boost for our campaign. To win a race like this, you need a lot of support and a strong grass roots effort. Our campaign is off to a tremendous start. We have inspired new volunteers and re-engaged many voters.”

As most of the world knows, Oprah Winfrey is a television pioneer, a magazine founder, a film producer, a Broadway producer, an award-winning actress, and an innovative philanthropist.

Chatman has run nonprofit community-based programs, including serving as the former President and CEO of the Northern Virginia Urban League. She founded the NOVA Coalition with dozens of faith-based and non-profits to increase voter participation, and was co-founder of an innovative intergenerational mentoring program The Grandfathers Group.

The event will feature several prominent leaders speaking on women’s issues, globally, nationally, and in the 8th District of Virginia.

CHATMAN’S CAMPAIGN HAS MAJOR MOMENTUM:

The campaign has already raised $200,000 before this fundraising event.

Chatman placed 2nd out of 11 candidates at Don Beyer’s straw poll.

At least 275 supporters attended the campaign’s kick-off event.

Chatman was the first of all the campaigns to file petitions on March 10th.
