Urgent: Boehner formally taps Gowdy to head select Benghazi committee

Per Pergram-Capitol Hill

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has formally tapped Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) to head the pending select committee on Benghazi.

A second-term lawmaker, Gowdy is a member of the House Oversight Committee which has probed Benghazi and is a former district attorney and former US Attorney.

Gowdy’s name was leaked Friday when word came that Boehner would empanel a special committee. But it was not a done deal. In fact when Gowdy’s name was at first floated, he indicated no one had even spoken to him about such an assignment.

The scope, jurisdiction, parameters and possible budget for the committee remain unknown as the text of a resolution creating the committee is still incomplete. The full House would have to vote in favor of the committee to create the body. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) indicated last week that a vote in respect to the committee could come to the floor this week.
