The pilot’s name? George H. W. Bush (affectionately known as 41.) And yes, of course, the pilot who was shot down was also our President.
I don’t play golf but, inspired by President Bush, I wanted to pitch in and I volunteered to drive a golf cart (look out!) for his charity to support Gary’s House, a home away from home for families with hospitalized loved ones.
I am forever inspired by President and Barbara Bush’s charity events and big hearts….

Pro/am celebrity tournament on June 24, 2014 in Kennebunkport to benefit Gary’s House, a home away from home for families with hospitalized loved ones.
In 1991, 18-year old Kennebunk resident Gary Pike was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. During the long siege of his disease and treatment, Gary’s parents slept in their car and on the hospital floor in order to stay near him. After Gary’s death in 1993, his mother, Trudy McNeal, spent the next seven years gathering the financial support of family, friends to establish a place where families could rest and refresh in quiet comfort when experiencing the ordeal of a critical illness of a loved one. The warm and spacious home at 97 State Street in Portland is aptly named for the McNeal’s courageous and inspirational son. Gary’s House, a program of Mercy Hospital, provides a safe, affordable home-away
-from-home for family members or individuals who have a loved one receiving medical treatment in any greater Portland area hospital.
Gary’s House is more than just a place for guests to rest. It’s a place where families can gain strength from one another while they cope with emotional and physical stresses that can accompany illness and hospitalization.
Located in a Federal-style home in Portland’s historic West End, Gary’s House is convenient to all area healthcare facilities, across from Mercy Hospital, and close to
Maine Medical Center.
