From FNC’s Chad Pergram:

McCain says int’l community should place “personal sanctions” on Putin

Off-cam with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI), Sen. John John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee about what the US should do about Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the shootdown of the plane and getting access to the crash site for international investigators.

Graham says President Obama would have been been better not speaking at all today. Levin, McCain and Inhofe all push for more US assistance to Urkaine. McCain says the international community should apply personal sanctions on Putin.

Graham on what the US should do about Russia:
Our friends in Russia understand pressure..they’re morally on the wrong side of this issue.

Graham:

Now is a good time to rally the people of the world. There’s a moment here fro action.

Graham on Russia being “isolated:
The worst thing they could be is not be isolated. They’re worried about their pocketbook.

Graham on Obama’s remarks about the plane today:
He’d have been better off having not spoken at all.

Levin:
I’m looking around for other ways the recovery could take place.

Levin:
The world has got to let Mr. Putin know he’s going to have a united world. The stonewalling cannot succeed.

  • Levin does not suggest the following, but says the Dutch, the international community and NATO should prepare for a scenario to perhaps go in. He says maybe get the Ukrainians to invite the Dutch in to the crash site under the NATO umbrella, supported by NATO forces. But note, he is is not saying this is definitely what should happen.

Levin:
I think Putin will understand when a soverign government sends its people..it’s harder to oppose it. People have a right to claim the bodies of their citizens.

Levin on dealing with Putin:
We’ve got to look for ways to understand the consquences of these mistakes.

McCain:
Why not put personal sanctions on Putin that he’s not welcome in any country I know of? He can come to the UN.

McCain:

America should try to armd the Ukrainians..now we need to give them weapons.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee:

We need to do a lot more than send sleeping bags (to the Ukrainians).

Inhofe:
All we do is roll up and appease…trial and error is the lowest form of learning.

Inhofe:
Our allies are not doing anything unless we do. Putin knows of our weakened condition. Lowest since the Carter Administration.
