In defense of Chris Cuomo — what do you expect him to do? Damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t

Chris Cuomo

I read an article somewhat critical of CNN’s Chris Cuomo and CNN for not reporting about his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and an alleged ethics scandal.

What do you expect Chris Cuomo to do?  He can’t win on this one.  People will criticize him no matter what he does.

If he reports on it…he will get trashed for doing it.   There will be many who say he was light on it or sugar coated it – regardless of the facts – because the story involves his brother.

And if  he doesn’t report on it (as apparently he has not), he gets trashed for not doing so as though he is trying to hide something.

So it is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t.

But the most important reason this is unfair to him is that there are literally hundreds of news organizations (TV, cable, print, radio, internet) that can report on it so that it is not a story that is not going to go unreported.   It will get reported.

When to report on something or not is not always an easy question.   If he had decided to report on this story, that would have been fine with me, too.  I know his connection to the Governor – so no secrets.  He would have mentioned it, too.  Like other viewers, I would take his relationship into consideration as I listen / watch.   And if he doesn’t report on it?   that’s fine, too.  If I want to hear about it I will watch someone else or ‘google.’

PS – don’t take this as a “watch CNN” ad.  I want you watching us, not CNN.  This is about journalism, about how we do our jobs….and yes, watch Fox News Channel!
