Note to CNN’s Carol Costello! Give it a rest….it just shows how shallow some in the media are

Last night’s debate was great!   It is what a debate should be.  It was smart questions — and the moderators got information for the voters.  That is the goal.

Someone ought to tell CNN’s Carol Costello that a debate is not meant to be mud wrestling (or as CNN’s debate ads, a boxing match) nor is it meant for moderators to be insulting to the candidates nor is it meant to be moderators showing off.

Some journalists want rudeness and show biz – or perhaps provoking a fight between the candidates – instead of getting information out of candidates who are running for office.  Apparently that is what Costello was looking for.

And finally, what could be more challenging than asking – in a responsible and respectful manner –  candidates their views on issues so that American voter is more informed than before the debate began?   No wonder the media are “on thin ice” with the American people.

Many journalists would be wise to note that while they may not agree with any or all candidates, these candidates (and the Democratic candidates) have distinguished records and deserve respect and not made out to be simply ratings props.  You can ask probing questions that are helpful to the American voter without raising your voice or trying to play gotcha.  Gotcha is not journalism.

My congrats to the Fox Business Network and to its moderators.

PS.  So that you don’t think this is just cheering for my own Fox team — I thought MS/NBC Rachel Maddow’s forum with the Democratic candidates on Friday night was likewise informative.  No ‘gotcha journalism’ — just inquiring questions seeking information.
