From FNC Jennifer Griffin:
According to a senior US defense offical, US warplanes carried out airstrikes and dropped humanitarian relief to Shia Turkmen who had been trapped and besieged by ISIS for 2 months in the town of Amerli, 100 miles north of Baghdad in Diyala province.
Amerli has a population of 15,000. Iraqi troops began a coordinated push to retake the town from ISIS on Saturday. It’s water and electricity have been cut off since June. The Turkmen are Iraq’s 3rd largest ethnic group after Arabs and Kurds. They make up about 4 percent of Iraq’s population. Iraqi forces were airlifted into the area on Saturday and were backed by US airstrikes.
