Below is from FNC’s Jennifer Griffin:
Senior US defense officials tell Fox that US military assets are in position and could strike at any moment, once the President gives the order. The Administration has decided to work through NATO and an emergency session in Brussels has been called for Weds so any military action is unlikely to take place before that meeting of NATO reps. UK Prime Minister David Cameron has scheduled a vote for Thursday in the British Parliament, calling them back from recess. It is also unlikely that any military strike would occur before that vote on Thurs. US officials also tell Fox that no strike is likely with UN inspectors still on the ground in Damascus. Sen Bob Corker, R – Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, just said during an interview on NBC that the Intell community is going to declassify and release the intelligence it has that chemical weapons were used by the Assad regime in the next 24 – 48 hours. This is part of building their public case for launching military action. No one doubts that military action will occur. “It’s not a matter of if but when,” according to one senior defense official.
Further, US military sources tell Fox that the planned military operation will include cruise missiles and possible long range stealth bombers but will NOT target Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles. “There is no way to ‘surgically strike’ Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles. Such an operation would require Special Operations and boots on the ground, which the President has ruled out at this time,” according to military sources. There are contingency plans to secure Syria’s chemical weapons, many of which are stored underground in bunkers, but this first phase of the military plan does not include forces that would secure the chemical weapons.
