Subject: Pool report #1: Meeting with Congress
Majority Leader Harry Reid, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi arrived at the White House at 5:30 for their meeting with President Obama.
Boehner emerged a few minutes before 7 p.m. to address gathered reporters (about 50). He said the president “reiterated one more time tonight he will not negotiate.” He said it was a “nice conversation, a polite conversation,” but he pushed Obama to “allow the process that our founders gave us to work out.”
Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck told reporters before the meeting wrapped up that no congressional staff was included in the meeting.
Reid and Pelosi appeared a minute later and spoke for about ten minutes, and Reid said Boehner should “just take yes for an answer.” They both said that the House has had six months to pass bills amending Obamacare, but that now is not the time.
Out of the three who came out and spoke (McConnell did not), Pelosi was the only one to use the word “optimistic.”
